Under One Sky: Looking Forward to Freedom and the Fourth of July

Under one sky — the hushed moment before the fireworks, when we stand together in the dark and wait for the light.

As July approaches, I always find myself anticipating a very specific, almost sacred moment: the heavy, expectant silence right before the fireworks start.

The sun has finally dipped below the horizon, and the summer air is thick and warm. An entire crowd goes completely quiet, looking up. In that hushed silence, standing

shoulder to shoulder in the dark, I always get this tight, overwhelming feeling in my chest. It is the sudden, profound realization of the sheer expanse of what this holiday means.

After the Star-Spangled Banner has played, in that brief, suspended breath before the first spark illuminating the shadows, the immense unity of our people becomes tangible. We aren’t strangers passing each other on the street. We aren't divided by the things that make us different. We are simply a unified people, standing together in the dark, waiting for the light.

To me, that is the true heartbeat of the upcoming holiday. When you strip away the noise, the barbecues, and the sparklers, the Fourth of July is fundamentally a celebration of a radical, beautiful concept: the freedom to simply be.

The Pride of the People When I see the flag flying this time of year, I am reminded that it is so much more than just a symbol fluttering in the breeze. It is a reflection of the pride, the grit, and the quiet resilience of the people who live beneath it. A country isn't strong just because of its borders; it is strong because of its people. It is built by the everyday folks who wake up and deliberately choose to leave their corner of the world a little better, a little kinder, and a little brighter than they found it.

The Past & Present: Forging Fundamental Rights Our history is a complex, sprawling tapestry. Next week, we pause to honor the forefathers who fought fiercely to protect the radical idea of independence. But our story didn't end at our founding. We also celebrate the incredible grit of the generations who have forged and expanded those liberties since—fighting to ensure that these fundamental rights are recognized as rights that everyone deserves.

These hard-won freedoms are the very bedrock that allows us to do as we please, to create freely, and to build lives that feel entirely our own. This foundation of liberty is what makes us uniquely strong as a nation. It is a beautiful, profound legacy, and we absolutely deserve to be deeply proud of it.

To celebrate doesn’t mean we bury our heads in the sand. We know that the work of building a perfect world is never truly finished, and there are always things we are still striving to improve. But next week is about choosing to focus on the beautiful things. It is about the freedom to hitch up a fifth-wheel and travel this vast, breathtaking country. Today, we celebrate the sheer, positive force of coming together, and the dignity of living our lives as we see fit.

The Future: What We Leave Behind As the sky lights up next week, I know I will find myself thinking about tomorrow. What kind of world are we stitching together for the future? We are the authors of the next chapter. My hope is that we carry the unity of this holiday forward—that we build a future defined by empathy, by continued and expanding freedoms, and by the understanding that we are all, ultimately, sharing the same sky.

So next week, whether you will be surrounded by family, sitting quietly with a pet who hates the loud noises, or standing in a field watching the colors rain down from the clouds, take a breath. Look up. Feel the weight and the beauty of the freedom you hold. We are so incredibly lucky to be here.
