The Lingering Shadow: Reflections on the Vernal Awakening

The wheel turned this past Friday, and for one fleeting moment, the universe held its breath in perfect balance.
Though the Equinox has technically passed, the energy of the Vernal Awakening is still settling into the soil. At WhichCraft? Studio, we spent the weekend in quiet observation, watching the light reclaim the shadows. Today, we invite you to step into that lingering magic with us.
Welcome to the season of the Equinox. While the day and the night have moved past their symmetrical embrace, the spiritual weight of this transition remains. At WhichCraft? Studio, our entire philosophy is built upon this very intersection—the delicate, often uncomfortable, yet undeniably beautiful space where the shadows and the light meet.
The Dichotomy of Ostara
In many modern traditions, this time is celebrated as Ostara—a season of joyous rebirth, fertile ground, and blooming flowers. And it is all of those things. But we believe that true rebirth cannot exist without a polite nod to death.
Think of the spring garden: it is built upon layers of decay. The fallen leaves and skeletal remains of winter aren't just remnants of the past; they are the literal foundation for new life. The seeds we plant today must first trust the cold, dark earth to hold them before they can break the surface and seek the sun.
For us, that balance of decay and design is fundamental. We find as much elegant energy in a dried seed pod or a skeletal winter branch as we do in a first-quarter moon or a blooming thistle. It is this specific juxtaposition—the dark botanical, the spooky, and the sophisticated—that fuels our craft.
Embodying the Energy: The Runes of Rebirth
To honor this turning of the wheel, we have focused on weaving these ancient energies directly into our textiles. Two runes, in particular, speak to the magic of this balance:
ᛒ (Berkano – The Birch Tree): This is the rune of the Great Mother and the essential energy of birth and fertility. For us, Berkano is not just about the sprout; it’s about the hidden, internal process of becoming. It is the gold thread we use to symbolize the first crack in the seed husk.
ᛟ (Othala – Inherited Property): Equally important to growth is understanding our roots. Othala represents ancestral knowledge and the traditions that ground us. We cannot spring forward without acknowledging the wisdom our past winter phases have left behind.
When you wear or display a piece from our studio, you aren't just holding a design; you are interacting with these specific frequencies of balance and intention.

How We Practice Balance
As modern practitioners, we don't believe you need an elaborate ritual to honor the equinox. Often, the most profound connections happen in the quiet moments of observation. Today, we invite you to acknowledge your own duality:
Honoring your Light: What new project or dream is ready to seek the sun?
Acknowledging your Shadow: What did you learn during the winter’s decay that is feeding your future?
The light is returning, but at WhichCraft? Studio, we’ll never truly leave the shadows behind.
