Grounded by Gravity: Finding Shadows When the Wheels Stop

Grounded by Gravity: Finding Shadows When the Wheels Stop
Grounded by Gravity: Finding Shadows When the Wheels Stop

There is a particular kind of magic that only reveals itself when you stop outrunning it.

I did not plan to stop. The road was always the point — the fifth wheel, the open sky, the thrill of waking up somewhere new and not quite knowing which direction the sun would rise. That was the life I had chosen. That was the witch I was becoming.

Then gas prices did what gas prices do, and the wheels went still.

We are parked now — not lost, not stuck, but parked. There is a difference. Parked means the engine still runs. Parked means you know the way out. And in this stillness, the shadows have finally had a chance to catch up.

The Gothic Guardians of the RV Park 🪶

There is a pair of Sandhill Cranes living near the edge of our lot. If you have never seen a Sandhill Crane up close, let me tell you: they are not delicate creatures. They are omen-like. Tall, grey, and deliberate, with a startling slash of red above the eye, they stalk through the world like ancient guardians that remember when the earth was younger. They mate for life, and they have a new clutch this season. I've been watching the chicks emerge — wobbly but already possessed of a quiet, eerie dignity.

I would have missed all of this if I had been moving.

I also would have missed the grass.

No one warns you, when you embrace the nomadic life, that stopping means you now have grass. Grass that requires an actual weed whacker. Let me paint you a picture: my dark, witchy soul standing in the oppressive, blinding Florida sun, trimming the perimeter of a home that literally has wheels. It is a profound exercise in resigned acceptance. 💀

Putting Down Roots You Never Planned to Grow 🌿

When you stay somewhere long enough, people start to recognize you. The woman two lots down knows your name. You are no longer a passing stranger — you are, however temporarily, a person from here.

It is strange and a little tender, this accidental belonging. It has sent me somewhere I hadn't expected to go: inward. Back toward the roots I carry with me. When you are always arriving, there is not much time to sit with what you already have. But stillness has a way of clearing the table.

Now, there is time:

  • To consult the cards: More time to sit with the tarot, the herbs, and the quiet old knowing. 🔮

  • To let ideas breathe: Letting a concept steep in the shadows before I rush it into the digitizing software.

  • To perfect the craft: The needle-and-thread kind, and the other kind, too.

The Studio That Never Sleeps 🧵

Here is what does not pause when the wheels do: the work.

The embroidery machine still hums. New ideas are finding their way from imagination to finished file, slowly and with the particular satisfaction of something made well. The WhichCraft? shop keeps growing into what I always wanted it to be — a strange, beautiful, highly intentional corner of the internet.

The road is still out there. The foggy forests and dark coastlines are still waiting, and I haven't forgotten a single one of them. The wheels will turn again. But for now, there are omens to watch, grass to trim, and an aesthetic to perfect.

Beyond the Stitch: A Gift for the Grounded 🎁

To celebrate this season of stillness (and to thank you for reading my musings!), I've tucked a little magic into the studio shop. Use code: STILLNESS
